When most people think about family photos, they picture an outdoor location with beautiful trees, open fields, or a sunset in the background. And while I love photographing families outdoors, an indoor studio can be just as beautiful.
For this recent family session, we headed to The Loft in Downtown McKinney, one of my favorite spaces for natural-light photography. With its white brick walls, exposed brick accents, and large windows, it's a great option for families who want something a little different from traditional outdoor portraits.
This session was a perfect example of why I love offering studio family photography in McKinney. We captured the classic family portraits everyone wants, but we also made time for individual photos, sibling moments, and those more relaxed interactions that make a gallery feel personal.
Why Choose a Studio for Your Family Photos?
One of the biggest advantages of booking an indoor family session is that we aren't depending on the weather.
Anyone who has lived in North Texas knows how unpredictable it can be. Between the Texas heat, windy days, and unexpected rain, planning an outdoor session sometimes requires a little flexibility.
With a studio session, we can skip worrying about the forecast and focus on getting great photos.
Studios are also a great option for families who prefer a cleaner, more minimal look. Instead of having a busy background, the attention stays on the people in the photographs.
I especially love this for families with older kids and teenagers. A simple studio setting allows us to create a mix of traditional portraits and more casual images without needing to travel between locations.
And if you're someone who prefers a more polished look for your family photos, a studio is definitely worth considering.
The Loft in Downtown McKinney: A Beautiful Natural-Light Studio
One reason I enjoy photographing at The Loft is the variety it offers within one space.
The white brick walls are perfect for clean, classic portraits. The exposed brick adds warmth and texture, and the natural light coming through the windows creates beautiful dimension throughout the room.
For this session, we used several different areas of the studio to give the family a gallery with plenty of variety.
We started with everyone together, then moved into smaller groupings and individual portraits. The neutral surroundings worked especially well with the family's outfits, which included creams, soft browns, olive green, and subtle patterns.
I always recommend coordinating outfits without making everyone match exactly. This family did a great job of choosing pieces that complemented one another while still allowing everyone to have their own style.
And those white cowboy boots? Such a fun detail!
Studio Family Photos Don't Have to Feel Stiff
I think one misconception about studio photography is that everyone has to stand in a straight line, look at the camera, and smile.
That's definitely not how I approach my sessions.
Of course, we'll get those traditional portraits. They're important, and I always want families to have a beautiful photo of everyone looking at the camera.
But I also want the gallery to feel like you.
During this session, we had the girls spinning together, the siblings interacting, and the family sitting on the floor laughing. Those are often the photos that become favorites because they show a little more of everyone's personality.
You don't need to know how to pose before arriving. I'll show you what to do, help everyone get comfortable, and give you enough direction that nothing feels awkward.
Whether we're shooting outdoors or inside a studio, my approach stays the same: a little direction, plenty of movement, and room for natural interactions.

Making Time for Individual Portraits, Too
One thing I always try to incorporate into family sessions is time for individual portraits.
As kids get older, those individual photos become especially meaningful. Their appearance changes, their interests develop, and before you know it, they're preparing for graduation.
During this session, I photographed each of the three kids individually, along with a few smaller family combinations.
I also made sure Mom and Dad had some photos together. Parents often spend years taking pictures of their children while forgetting to get in front of the camera themselves.
Your family session is a great opportunity to update those photos, too.
The simple studio setting makes it easy to move between these combinations without spending extra time changing backgrounds or locations.
From Studio Family Photos to Senior Portraits at the Lake
One of my favorite things about working with families is getting to photograph different milestones as their kids grow.
This family's oldest son is a high school senior, and I'm excited that we'll be working together again in the spring for his senior portraits.
But instead of heading back to the studio, we're planning something completely different.
He's on his school's competitive fishing team, so we're taking his senior photos to the lake!
I love incorporating a senior's interests into their session. Whether it's a sport, a hobby, a vehicle, or a location they spend a lot of time at, those personal details make the photos feel more like them.
For his session, being at the lake will allow us to create portraits that reflect something he's genuinely passionate about.
It's also a perfect example of how different photography locations can serve different purposes. The studio was an ideal setting for the family's portraits, while the lake will give his senior photos an entirely different look.

Beautiful Family Photos That Deserve More Than a Screen
Whether you choose a studio or an outdoor location, I want your photographs to become something you can actually enjoy in your home.
One advantage of studio portraits is how easily they work with different interior styles. Simple backgrounds and neutral colors create timeless images that look beautiful as framed wall art.
For this family, I can easily picture a large framed portrait from the session displayed in their home, along with smaller prints of the kids.
A custom family album would also be a beautiful way to bring together the traditional portraits, individual images, and candid moments from the session.
As a full-service photographer, I help my clients think beyond the digital gallery. From planning the session to selecting photographs for albums and wall art, I'm here to guide you through the process.
